Lecture: GIS features in MariaDB and MySQL

What has happened in recent years ...

MySQL originally only had very rudimentary GIS support. Both MariaDB and recent MySQL releases have improved quite a bit on this front though. We will look at the improvements and at the differences between the two extended implementations.

MySQL originally implemented spatial relationship checks based on bounding rectangle checks only. This has been improved in both MariaDB and MySQL for quite a while now, allowing for true spatial relationship tests like "contains" or "touches" based on actual geometries. The latest releases also have added other spatial features beyond that. The talk will describe the current state of, and the difference between, implementations in MariaDB and MySQL.

We'll also show operations on imported OpenStreetMap data, and how basic operations compare to PostGIS performance wise.
