Introducing the openSUSE build service

Packaging software & building distributions

This talk will outline how to build packages for SUSE Linux and introduce the openSUSE Build Service. It will give an overview of tools and functionalities that the openSUSE Build Service offers and will explain how to use them.

One of the biggest advantages of open source is the sheer number of available software and the fast update cycles. This advantage is an issue at the same time as it comes with cost. Software authors have to make sure that their software runs on the current system. Users demand binary versions of the software when compiling takes a long time or is difficult to do. But keeping all binaries up to date for existing systems is very time consuming. Sometimes even impossible when the software author has no access to needed architectures or distributions.

The openSUSE build services will provide software authors a possibility to easily build packages for multiple distributions and have them automatically rebuilt if the underlying distribution changes.

Software authors can use the build service to build their software for multiple distributions on several architectures and keep it automatically up to date. User who like to experiment can create custom tailored package versions. People in search for a specific package can check the build server if it hosts a version that meets their needs.
